A Review of the Downsizing of Eastern State Hospital and the Impact on Hampton Roads
December 16, 2010 After the State of Virginia downsized the capacity of Eastern State Hospital (ESH), from 250 beds to 150, the number of forensic patients housed at nearby jails increased. A state-level review found that there were approximately 40 forensic patients being housed at local jails in the area. Additionally, at the same time that ESH capacity was decreased, the state failed to increase funding for community supports and services.
