Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders: Autism & Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, United States, 2006
December 18, 2009 Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reviewed 2006 medical and school records for 400,000 children in 11 ADDM sites around the United States and compared the 2006 data with data collected from 10 Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring sites in 2002. They found that one in 100 children were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The researchers noted that improved diagnosis could account for some of the increased prevalence, but an increase in children's risk of developing an ASD could not be ruled out.
