Mental Health & Criminal Justice Intercept Project Report: A Community Planning Process in Johnson County, Kansas, to Improve the Response to Adults With Mental Illness in the Criminal Justice System
December 31, 2010 A report by United Community Services to Johnson County found that communities seeking to reduce criminal justice involvement among persons with mental illness should focus on six intercept points in the legal system. Law enforcement dispatchers and officers should receive enhanced training about mental illness and treatment alternatives to arrest. District courts should ensure consistent mental illness screening, and expand mental health diversion options.
