On January 12, 2021, the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued this announcement of practice guidelines for the administration of buprenorphine for treating opioid addiction. HHS intends to expand access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) by exempting physicians from certain certification requirements currently needed to prescribe buprenorphine for addiction treatment.
