Medicare To Reimburse For Community Health Worker Services
Starting in January 2024, for the first time Medicare will reimburse for services provided by a community health worker (CHW) to provide services associated with meeting beneficiary health-related social needs (HRSN). In the proposed 2024 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed several payment and coding changes related to HRSN. The coding and reimbursement changes are intended to account for the resources involved when clinical professionals involve CHWs, care navigators, and peer support specialists in furnishing medically necessary care.
