Wireless Carriers To Implement Georouting For 988 Calls To Ensure More Localized Crisis Response
On September 25, 2024, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline announced that the process to launch geogrouting for cellphone calls to 988 contact centers had started. Currently, cellphone calls to 988 are routed to a 988 call center based on the device’s area code. With geogrouting, the wireless carrier will route the call to a 988 call center based on the caller’s approximate location. Georouting does not reveal the caller’s precise location. Two large wireless carriers, Verizon and T-Mobile, have started implementing the process.
