23andMe Shuts Down API
Personal genetics company 23andMe recently announced it plans to close its application programming interface (API) to developers in early September. The decision comes amid concerns relating to user privacy.
App developers—who initially had access to consumers’ raw genomic data when the 23andMe API opened in 2012—will now only have access to company-generated reports. Research partners, however, will still have access to the raw data. According to statements from 23andMe leadership, the company is updating its API program to focus on apps that build on the interpretations and results that have been provided to its users.
