10.3 Million Gained Health Coverage During The Marketplace’s First Annual Open Enrollment Period
Between September 2013 and April 2013, 10.3 million uninsured adults gained health care coverage during the first open enrollment period for the Health Insurance Marketplace. During that time period, the uninsured rate for adults ages 18-64 fell from 21 percent to 16.3 percent, with the greatest enrollment among those states that expanded their Medicaid programs under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). The increase did not include the 3 million young adults who gained health insurance coverage through their parents’ plans in 2012.
