10% Of Adult Smokers In Medicaid Received Cessation Medications
In 2013, 10% of adult smokers who were also Medicaid enrollees received smoking cessation medications. In the same year, Medicaid spent $103 million on cessation medications, or 0.25% of the $41.2 billion cost to Medicaid of smoking-related diseases. Medicaid enrollees are about twice as likely to be current smokers (32%) as the general United States population (17%). In 2010 and 2013, 15% of all Medicaid expenditures ($40 billion) were attributable to smoking, and the cost of smoking-related diseases among Medicaid enrollees is predicted to rise to $75 billion in 2016.
