1% Of The U.S. Population Accounted For Nearly 22% Of Total Health Care Spending
In 2011, about one-percent of the United States community-based population accounted for 21.5% of the more than $2.5 trillion in total community-based health care expenditures that year. The annual mean expenditure for the top one-percent was $92,825. About one-fifth of this highest cost population in 2011 was also among the highest cost one-percent in 2012. In 2012, the highest cost one-percent accounted for 22.7% of total health care expenditures—the annual mean expenditure for the top one-percent was $97,956.
