26% Of Adults Have Two Or More Chronic Health Conditions; They Account For 57% Of All Health Care Expenditures

About 25.9% of the adult non-institutionalized civilian population had two or more treated chronic conditions in 2012. These consumers accounted for 57% of all health care expenditures that year. The prevalence of multiple chronic conditions was highest among adults age 65 and older; about 65.6% had two or more treated chronic conditions. Within that group, 42.3% had two to three treated chronic conditions, and 23.2% had four or more.
