Virginia Retirement Community To Reform Policies Following DOJ Fair Housing Action
On May 12 2015, the federal Department of Justice filed a consent order against Fort Norfolk Community, Inc., dba, Harbor’s Edge, a Virginia continuing care retirement community (CCRC) alleging violations of the Fair Housing Act in policies that restricted the activities of residents with disabilities. Fort Norfolk presented residents in assisted living or nursing care settings from accessing activities and areas reserved for “independent living” residents, in violation of the Fair Housing Act.
The court approved the consent order on May 18, 2015. It requires Fort Norfolk Community, Inc. to pay $350,000 into a settlement fund for residents . . .
