Employee health care costs for a family of four rose 4.3% in 2017, from $25,826 during 2016 to $26,944 for an average employer-sponsored preferred provider organization (PPO) plan. Of the $26,944 cost, 57%, $15,259 is paid by the employer and $11,685 is paid by the employee. The employee’s share includes $7,151 (27% of the total cost) in payroll deductions for premiums, and $4,534 (17% of the total cost) in out-of-pocket costs incurred at the time of care.
