The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) sued the state of South Carolina on December 9, 2024, over the state’s failure to provide sufficient community-based placements for adults with serious mental illness (SMI). In 2023, the DOJ released investigation findings and notified the state that its use of Community Residential Care Facilities (CRCFs) unnecessarily segregated adults with SMI in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
