Half Of Adults With Chronic Conditions Fail To Take Medications As Prescribed
Nearly 50% of people under age 65 prescribed medications to treat diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol failed to take the medications as prescribed, according to an analysis of claims data for nearly 25,000 commercially insured adults. Medication non-adherence was linked to a higher rate of potentially preventable hospitalizations, which cost $8.6 million.
Over 12 months, medication non-adherence was linked to the following outcomes:
Diabetes—The hospitalization rate was 77% higher among those who were non-adherent. There were 128 avoidable hospitalizations, and the cost was more than $2.1 million.
