Health Care Costs For CareFirst Medical Home Enrollees 3.2% Less Than Expected In 2013; Savings Total $130 Million

On July 10, 2014, CareFirst, a health plan in Maryland, reported that health care costs in 2013 were 3.2% lower for members enrolled in its Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) program, than the expected cost of care for the PCMH enrollees. Health care costs for these members were $130 million less than projected. During 2013, compared to CareFirst members receiving traditional care, CareFirst PCMH enrollees had 6.4% fewer hospital admissions per 1,000 members; 11.1% fewer hospital days per 1,000 members; 8.1% fewer hospital readmissions for all causes per 1,000 members; and 11.3 . . .
