Justice Department & Hinds County Mississippi Agree On Prison Reform Settlement
On June 23, 2016, the U.S. Department of Justice reached a settlement with Hinds County, Mississippi to reform the county’s criminal justice system. The settlement was the result of an investigation of he Hinds County Adult Detention Center and the Jackson City Detention Center. The settlement resolves the DOJ’s finding that the Hinds County Jail failed to protect prisoners from violence and excessive force and held them past their court-ordered release dates, in violation of the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act (CRIPA).
