Kansas Legislature Considering Restrictions On Access To Medicaid Psychotropics
The Kansas legislature is considering a new approach for Medicaid Psychotropic prescription oversight, which would add the class of psychotropic medications to those reviewed by the Kansas Drug Utilization Review Board. Currently, Kansas Medicaid is not allowed to manage mental health medications in the same way it does other drug classes; they are not subject to review, and the state does not control access via the Medicaid preferred drug list. As a result, the KanCare Medicaid managed care plans are responsible for pharmacy, including mental health medications—and must provide open access to all psychotropic medications.
