Lawrenceburg, Indiana Sued For Zoning Against Supported Living Home For People With I/DD

On September 27, 2016, the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana (ACLU of Indiana) sued the City of Lawrenceburg for zoning against a supported living home for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The ACLU of Indiana sued on behalf of New Horizons Rehabilitation, Inc. after the city classified the home as a “boarding house or medical facility,” which prevented New Horizons from moving forward with construction. Indiana statutes specify that supported living homes are to be classified under the same zoning requirements as other residential structures.
