In 2014, Median Out-Of-Pocket Health Care Costs Totaled $204 Per Person

Among non-institutionalized Americans who had health care expenses in 2014, (about 85.1% of the population), the median out-of-pocket cost was $204, and the average was $688. Average out-of-pocket expenses increased with age, ranging from $288 for children under 18 to $1,253 for people aged 65 and older. About 8.4% of people had out-of-pocket expenses over $2,000. The percentage of people with out-of-pocket expenses over $2,000 increased with age, from 3.5% for children 18 or younger to 17.3% for people aged 65 or older.
