In 2016, Medicaid Budgets Increased By $309 Million
During fiscal year 2016, 13 states cut Medicaid spending, and 13 states increased Medicaid spending, for an aggregate net increase of $309.1 million in Medicaid funding. The remaining states made no changes to Medicaid funding. During fiscal year 2016, Medicaid averaged about 29% of total state spending and 23% of state general fund spending. For fiscal year 2017, 34 states enacted Medicaid funding increases while 10 states enacted decreases, which resulted in a net increase of $5.5 billion in new funding for Medicaid.
