Number Of People With Trouble Paying Medical Bills Down 22% Between 2011 & 2016

The number of people under age 65 in households having trouble paying medical bills dropped by 22% between 2011 and the first half of 2016. In 2011, 56.5 million people, representing about 21.3% of the American population under age 65 reported difficulty paying medical bills. During the first half of 2016, 43.8 million people reported difficulty paying medical bills; they represented about 16.2% of the population under age 65.
