One-Third Of Emergency Room Visits In New York In 2013 Were Potentially Preventable
In New York State in 2013, about one-third of hospital emergency room visits were potentially preventable. For some, the condition could have been handled outside an emergency room. For others, the condition crisis could have been averted through better care coordination and more timely access to primary and preventive care. In total, there were 6.4 million visits to hospital emergency rooms in New York in 2013. More than two million of those visits were for one of 10 common conditions. About 90% of visits for the 10 common conditions were potentially preventable.
