West Virginia Employs The Largest Percentage Of Health Care Workers Compared To Its Total Workforce, Highest Of Any U.S. State
Across the states, the percentage of state-employed health care workers as a share of the total workforce in the state was highest in West Virginia during 2024, at 16%, and lowest in the District of Columbia, at 8%, according to an analysis through a data tool published by KFF, a non-profit organization focused on health policy. New York employed the next largest percentage of health care workers (15%), followed by seven states where 14% of those employed were health care workers (Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and South Dakota).Â
