Rhode Island To Transition Up To 300 Adults With Developmental Disabilities From Group Homes To Community-Based Living

The Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals (BHDDH) plans to transition up to 300 adults with developmental disabilities who are currently living in state-run and privately run group homes* to community-based “shared residential living arrangements” with foster families. By transitioning the individuals to lower cost settings, DHBBH seeks to generate savings to close a budget gap of $6 million. As of January 12, 2016, BHDDH had planned to complete the transitions by March 31, 2016, despite concerns about the aggressive transition timeline.
