A Natural Language Processing Tool Identified Needs For Social Services Among People With Dementia
A natural language processing (NLP) tool used with unstructured notes in electronic health records successfully identified people with dementia who had need for services to address social determinants of health (SDoH). Such needs included housing insecurity, transportation, food insecurity, medication access, social isolation, and financial problems. The NLP tool also identified those with signs of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. The tool was able to extract SDoH information in all seven SDoH domains but was less accurate at detecting housing and medication insecurities.
