During the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) public health emergency year, the number of children hospitalized for Type 1 diabetes (T1D) was 57% higher than expected in southern California. The first COVID-19 year is defined as March 19, 2020, through March 18, 2021. During that period, 187 children in the region were admitted for new-onset T1D, compared with 119 children admitted the previous year. Of the 187 children admitted for newly diagnosed T1D, about 2.1% (four children) had an active infection with COVID-19 at the time of admission.
