How To Build The Right Executive Team

March 26, 2026

1:00 – 2:00 pm ET

Many chief executive officers (CEOs) begin building their executive team by looking at the leaders they already have and trying to adapt those roles to the organization’s future. But effective executive team design starts somewhere else entirely: with the organization’s strategic direction.

A high-performing executive team must be built to execute the organization’s strategic vision, support long-term growth, and lead through complexity. That means defining the capabilities required for the future before evaluating whether the current leadership structure can deliver on those goals.

In this one-hour live presentation, Kim Bond, Senior Associate at OPEN MINDS, will guide executive teams through a practical framework for designing leadership structures that support a two- to five-year strategic plan.

The session will walk participants through clarifying strategic priorities and identifying the specific skills, expertise, and leadership capabilities required to achieve them. Attendees will also explore how complementary leadership strengths—visionary, operational, and analytical—can be aligned to strengthen problem-solving, decision-making, staff leadership, and organizational accountability.

What This Case Study Explores

This session examines an actionable framework for executive team design focused on three critical leadership questions:

  • What leadership capabilities are required to execute the organization’s 2–5-year strategic vision
  • How to evaluate current executive team members objectively to determine role fit and future alignment
  • How to distinguish between technical expertise and executive-level leadership effectiveness

What Executive Attendees Will Learn

Executive attendees will gain practical insights on:

  • Aligning executive team structure, leadership capabilities, and decision authority with the organization’s future direction rather than its current composition
  • Balancing complementary strengths and leadership gaps through informed decisions about hiring, restructuring, and role redesign
  • Recognizing the importance of people leadership, cultural alignment, accountability, and the risks of retaining “brilliant but toxic” individuals within executive leadership
