On June 5, 2021, the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that as of the end of 2020 about 31 million Americans, or 10% of the population, had health coverage through provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). This estimate did not include the 1.2 million new enrollments through HealthCare.gov during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that began on February 15, 2021, and runs through August 15, 2021. In all, about 32.2 million Americans have coverage through the PPACA.
