The ruling, issued by a Texas district court judge, ordered the state to ensure that the state psychiatric hospitals would be able to treat up to 400 individuals held in local jails who are waiting for competency assessment or restoration treatment in order to stand trial. The state has through May 2012 to comply. The order came as a follow-up ruling to a summary judgment hearing on November 10, 2011 in the 2007 class action lawsuit, Floyd Taylor, et al., v. David Lakey, M.D., filed by Disability Rights Texas.
