The American Hospitals Association (AHA), with the services of Ernst and Young, analyzed the community benefit information for not-for-profit hospitals. AHA used information that non-profit hospitals filed with IRS in the 'Schedule H' forms. A report released by Enerst and Young indicates that hospitals are exceeding the community benefit obligations that are conferred by their tax-exempt status. In addition, the report demonstrates that hospitals spend an average of 11.3% of their total expenses on benefits to their communities.
