An annual average of 8.6% of U.S. children ages 5-17 (about 4.6 million persons) received some type(s) of treatment for mental health disorders in 2007-2009, with 6.7% of U.S. children ages 5-17 receiving ambulatory care and 1.8% receiving prescription medications during this period. On average, 1.0% received other services such as hospital inpatient stays, emergency room visits, or home health care.
