Identifying Emotional & Behavioral Problems in Children Aged 417 Years in The United States, 20012007
February 24, 2012
About 7.4% of children in the United States between the ages of four and 17 years have serious emotional or behavioral difficulties. However, a comparison of two child and adolescent screening instruments on the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) found differences in the percentage of children identified as having difficulties. One measure, a version of the brief Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), identified 4.3% of children and an NHIS question asking parents about their children's difficulties identified 5.1%. Only 28% of children identified as having difficulties were identified by both measures.
