Equal Employment Opportunity Commission v. Cottonwood Financial

March 27, 2012
In December 2011, a court ruled in favor of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of Sean Reilly in a wrongful-discharge claim against Cottonwood Financial. Mr. Reilly was fired after requesting medical leave to adjust to a new medication to treat symptoms of bipolar disorder. The judge found that Cottonwood had fired Mr. Reilly because of his mental disability. In addition to awarding Mr. Reilly compensation, the court ordered Cottonwood to improve its policies and train its employees to avoid violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.
