The Michigan Legislature adopted a law mandating that health insurance carriers cover the costs of diagnosing and treating autism, but also passed legislation allocating $15 million for the current fiscal year to create an autism coverage fund. The autism coverage fund is only to help health insurance carriers, third-party administrators, and self-insured employer plans that elect to offer the autism coverage offset the costs of providing the new diagnosis and treatment benefit for covered members with autism.
