New York Senate Bill 7325-A of 2011, To Require Medicaid Managed Care To Cover Atypical Antipsychotic Prescriptions As Written

On January 1, 2013, New York Medicaid will implement a change to its Medicaid managed care organization (MCO) contracts requiring the MCOs to cover prescriptions for atypical antipsychotics as written and honor a prescriber’s determination of medical necessity—even for non-formulary medications and for those that require prior authorization. Previously the state had permitted the MCOs to determine medical necessity. The new policy was a provision in the state’s 2012- 13 budget.
