Humana Ends Cataract Surgery Prior Authorization Policy In Georgia

Effective August 1, 2023, Humana ended its one-year-old prior authorization requirement for cataract surgery for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries in Georgia. During August 2022, Humana began requiring pre-approval through iCare Health Solutions for all cataract and posterior capsulotomy () surgeries.

When Humana announced its new policy last August, the American Academy of Ophthalmology teamed up with the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) to provide documented patient cases that substantiated the need to rescind the policy.
