Fiscal Analysis Of Washington State Initiative 1240 To Implement Public Charter Schools

The Washington State Office of Fiscal Management reviewed the provisions of Initiative 1240, a ballot measure that would require the state to authorize up to 40 public charter schools over five years. If all 40 charter schools start operations, known state agency implementation costs are estimated at nearly $3.1 million over five fiscal years. Currently, the state’s public schools spend an average of $5,814 per student for basic education funding and transportation costs.
