State Corrections Expenditures, FY 1982-2010

The Bureau of Justice Statistics’s State Corrections Expenditures report for the fiscal years 1982-2010 breaks down states’ corrections expenditures into categories such as prison medical expenditures, per capita calculations, and prisoner statistics. Statistician Tracey Kyckelhahn found that states spent about $48.5 billion on corrections in 2010, a decline of 5.6% from 2009.
