A $10 Million Donation To St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation Will Help Develop AI For Blindness Caused By Common Chronic Eye Diseases
St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation in Ontario announced a donation of $10 million to help develop an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm to speed up diagnosis of two common eye conditions that lead to blindness—age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). More than 3.5 million Canadians are living with one of these conditions, the announcement stated. For both diseases, retinal imaging is crucial to their detection, diagnosis, and the monitoring of treatment effectiveness. The algorithm is anticipated to identify biomarkers to predict disease development, and help clinical professionals deliver personalized medicine.
