On December 30, 2013, the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that it had awarded over $307 million in performance bonuses to 23 states for improving the eligibility determination and redetermination processes for and enrollment of eligible children in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The bonus awards ranged from just over $1 million in North Dakota to over $58 million in Colorado.
