It is estimated that some 90 million people in the United States experience chronic pain, and that the cost of treatment for this complex syndrome is between $65 and $75 billion a year. This is a significant sum, but we shouldn't be particularly surprised - most visits to primary care physicians occur in response to concerns that include pain of some sort.
