HHS Clarification About HIPAA In Message to Our Nation’s Health Care Providers

The Federal Department of Health & Human Services released the letter on January 15, 2013 to ensure awareness of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule. The letter, written by the director of the Office for Civil Rights, Leon Rodriguez, informs providers that they are allowed to disclose a patient's information and mental health records to law enforcement, a patient's family members, or others if the provider believes the patient poses a danger to himself or other people.
