NIMH Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) Project

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH0 launched the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) project in mid-2011 to transform mental health diagnosis from a symptom-based approach, which is currently used in the American Psychiatric AssociationÂ’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), to one based on biology and brain function. The system under development will be based on brain structures and circuits that affect negative valence systems, positive valence systems, cognitive systems, systems for social processes, and arousal/modulatory systems.
