Medicare Payments: How Much do Chronic Conditions Matter?

Beneficiaries with two or more chronic conditions account for 86% of total Part A Medicare payments and 70% of total Part B payments, though they comprise only 36% of Part A and 41 % of Part B enrollment. The research was conducted by Erkan Erdem, Ph.D.; Sergio I. Prada, Ph.D.; and Samuel C. Haffer, Ph.D. of IMPAQ International, LLC. The study is part of a larger, three year project by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services called the “Comparative Effectiveness Research Public Use Files Data Pilot Project.”
