New York State Proposed Settlement Agreement With DOJ Regarding Community-Based Housing & Services For Adult Care Home Residents WithMental Illness

On July 23, 2013, New York State and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) reached a settlement regarding the provision of community-based housing and services for up to 4,500 New York City residents with mental illness living in 23 large adult homes. The settlement is related to a lawsuit, Disability Advocates, Inc. et al., v. Paterson, et al., filed in 2003; the DOJ joined the lawsuit in 2009. Under the agreement, the state will provide as many scattered-site, supported housing units as necessary to afford all adult home residents with serious mental illnesses . . .
