For the 2013-2014 school year, Head Start and Early Head Start programs across the United States and its territories eliminated services for 57,265 children because the federal budget sequestration process required the Office of Head Start to cut spending by five percent, or $405 million compared to its 2012 budget of nearly $8 billion. The cuts affect 6,000 children who were enrolled in Early Head Start and about 51,000 children enrolled in Head Start.
