California Court Ruling In Coleman & Plata v. Brown, NO. 2:90-cv-0520 LKK DAD (PC), Extending Compliance Deadline

On October 21, 2013, a panel of federal judges granted the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) a one-month extension to its end of January deadline to reduce the prison inmate census by about 4,400. The state must reduce the prison census to 137.5 % of capacity by February 24, 2013. As of October 2, 2013, CDCRÂ’s 34 adult prisons had 120,359 inmates. The court order requires that the number of inmates drop to 112,164. The state has plans for placing about half of the 8,000 inmates.
