February 19, 2009 The lawsuit, Disability Advocates, Inc. v. Paterson, et al., was filed in 2003 by Disability Advocates, the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, MFY Legal Services, Inc., Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, LLP, and the Urban Justice Center. It was filed on behalf of about 4,000 residents of adult homes with serious mental illness in New York City. The plaintiffs allege that the state violates the Americans with Disabilities Act by placing people with psychiatric disabilities in institutional adult homes instead of providing community-based treatment and support . . .
