April 15, 2009 The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is using a research-based assessment tool to reduce recidivism and help the department maximize resources. The tool is called Correctional Offender Management Profiling for Alternative Success (COMPAS); it is used to assess incoming inmates risk and needs for rehabilitative programming. Offenders and parolees at high risk of reoffending will receive more intensive programs and case management than lower-risk offenders and parolees . . .
